Tom Cruise Breaks the Rules at Cannes

Tom Cruise Breaks Cannes Tradition with Red Carpet Selfie at 'Mission: Impossible' Premiere

At the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Tom Cruise and the cast of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning defied a longstanding red carpet rule by taking a group selfie during their premiere appearance. This act contravened the festival's 2018 ban on red carpet selfies, instituted to maintain the event's decorum and prevent disruptions.

Director Christopher McQuarrie captured the moment, which featured Cruise alongside co-stars Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Hannah Waddingham, Angela Bassett, and others. The photo was later shared on social media with the caption "Mission: Selfie. Accomplished," acknowledging their awareness of the rule.

The red carpet selfie Ban

The selfie ban at Cannes was introduced by artistic director Thierry Frémaux, who criticised the practice for trivialising the red carpet experience and causing logistical issues. Despite the breach, the festival has not indicated any punitive response, possibly due to the film's positive reception, including a 7.5-minute standing ovation.

This incident adds to Cruise's history of headline-making appearances, such as his recent stunt at the London premiere of the same film, where he climbed atop vintage planes. The Cannes selfie moment underscores the enduring appeal of Cruise and the Mission: Impossible franchise, even as it challenges festival conventions.
